Still on the Hill Music Collection |
Ozark: A Celebration in Song The songs on this CD are about the amazing folks and places we've grown to know and love. For over a decade we have been exploring the Ozarks in an unusual way. During every concert we would ask our audience if there was anybody living in the hills nearby that were worthy of a song written about them. This method of excavation turned up more jewels than we could ever fit on this recording. We are hoping that this project will contribute in some important way to the ongoing living tradition that is still alive and well but hidden throughout the region. Our modern society, fueled by television, has homogenized our culture, yet it seems the hills will always possess the power to create colorful characters that continue to find their own way through the maze of progress. It's the unsung heroes of the Ozarks that best reflect what makes these hills distinctive and we hope that by telling their stories in song, we will be nurturing an ongoing tradition. This project was made possible by an Arkansas Heritage grant in conjunction with Jones Television. Sales of this CD and accompanying booklet (in Arkansas ) will help to provide banjos, fiddles and guitars for rural, underserved children though "Play it Again, Arkansas". Hope you enjoy this project as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Mouthpeace No matter where we meander, songs about peace, justice or ecology always make it into our shows. We feel that it is part of our responsibility as folk musicians to use our voice as a vehicle to help make changes in our world, our community, our neighborhood, our home or in the heart of one other person. This is a collection of eight of those songs on topics close to our heart from tolerance to optimism to finding courage to do what feels right.

Never Ending Conversation This is classic poetry sung to music. Blake, Auden, Stephens, Hughes, Cummings ... like the 'Art Song' of old, but in a beautiful folk setting. The poems are surrounded by a rich combination of acoustic instruments - guitar, mandolin, pump organ, violin, acoustic bass and a host of other odds and ends. The emphasis is on beauty and remaining true to the poet's intent. Kelly Mulhollan, best known for his role in the folk duo Still on the Hill, stretches his creative, musical wings in new directions here, wrapping every detail and innuendo of the poet's words into songs that lift the words from the page and allow them to fly.

Folk Stage Live You could call this project a retrospective of favorite songs from the first two Still on the Hill CD's, but this time recorded LIVE in the duo form. It's exactly what you hear when you catch their show LIVE. It's raw and passionate and if you close your eyes you can imagine you are in the room experiencing their magic for yourself. In addition to the time tested songs from the first two CD's, there are two new songs "Doors" and "Two Tone Town" along with a rousing rendition of the traditional blues/spiritual "In My Time Of Dying".

Still Still was the last CD recorded by Still on the Hill as a quartet. Is it Folk? Is it Bluegrass? This CD sums up the Folkgrass label that describes Still on the Hill better than any other, a perfect mix of the two genres. Mulhollan, Henschell and Lancaster are all prolific songwriters and skilled wordsmiths. Blend this with traditional bluegrass instrumentation and you've got Still on the Hill!

Christmas Carols This recording of traditional Christmas carols played on a rustic folk guitar started out as a simple gift for a friend but quickly took on a life of its own. Due to popular demand, Christmas Carols on an Ozark Guitar is finally available on CD. The instrument used on this recording was built by one of the last homesteaders of the Ozark Mountains. Ed Stilley of Hogscald Hollar cut down trees from his land then nailed and glued them together. All of the metal fittings and springs inside the guitar create a mysterious reverb that Ed describes as the voice of God. Kelly's simple and charming instrumental arrangements of these classic carols are a fit tribute to this precious piece of musical folk art.
